Final Project

Again in my final project, I want to explore the idea of uncertainty. I want to explore this idea using a mirror. There are many stories, songs, and movies about mirrors. Sometimes the plots are magical, scary or even beautiful. Why is that? We are looking at a same object, but why do people feel different? Why is it that we look at ourselves through the mirror the first thing in the morning? It is I believe because the mirrors explore the idea of uncertainty, and we look for answers desperately to find it. I want to explore this idea using photoshop. I want to give the project an eerie feeling, so I can leave the viewers something to think about after looking at it. And I want to use an endless loop, so they can stare at it for a long time. It would be very cool if my art is shown in the art gallery in the TV near restrooms, so they would be afraid to look at the mirror.
I got many of my ideas from the mirror scare scenes from various movies, and Michael Jackson's song the man in the mirror. While the movies main reason is to scare the audience, and the song was trying to make the lyric very meaningful, deep down, they were all trying to explore the idea of uncertainty using the mirrors. The movie is trying to scare the viewers using the uncertainty, and Jackson is trying to know who he is looking at when he sees the mirror.
In this project, I am going to use many filters, photo filters, and piles of layers to give the different feeling to the mirror. Also I am going to use animation to make sure that viewers stare my project for a longtime.

Blog assignment 5

My most significant accomplishment would be the complex layering that I am now able to do. Now I can not only put pictures on top of one another, now I can use mask and photo filters and the complex brush and patch tools to make the layerings very smooth. If you look at my midterm it seems as if the umbrella was already next to the screaming guy. But i used the filters tools to make the surface of the umbrella similar to the figure, and used eraser tools and healing brush tools to make it very smooth.
For me the most challenging part of the course was the selection. It requires patience and very steady hands to select the part, I want to. It was very difficult in the beginning. When the selection suddenly disappears or the pointer suddenly jumps to different area, I got very frustrated. But now, with the knowledge of many shortcut keys and many other tools, it is much easier, and the selection got much smoother.
If you look at my quiz 3 and my midterm, you can see that they both used many techniques. But my midterm has a some kind of meaning, while my quiz doesn't. My quiz seems like a display of techniques, while my midterms shows some big idea incorporated in the art. It is very hard to explain. I feel like denotations or the techniques are similar, but you can certainly "sense" that one is an art while the other is not. I think the quiz is just to please the eyes of the viewer, while the midterm is to make the viewers to feel and to think when they look at the art.

Blog Assignment 4

Again in my final project I want to explore the idea of uncertainty. I want to explore this idea using a mirror. There are many stories, songs, movies about mirrors. sometimes the plots are magical, scary and even beautiful sometimes. Why is that? quiz 3

Quiz

The Holiday poster is very feminine because you can feel some sort of emotion between them. Judging by how they are smiling and how they look at each other, I think they are in love and they are special to each other. This emotion in the poster appeals to the girls because girls look for romance whether from her lover or from the movie. Also judging by their looks and how they dress, they are trying to impress the other and at the stage where they have just started dating. Also the font plays the big part as well. The font is clean and simple. The white background brings out the font. Also the names in the poster hint the audience that the movie is going to be a romantic comedy. Jude Law is in a very romantic movie while Jack Black is in comedies.

Movie Kick Ass poster indicates that the movie is targeting younger guys.  The superhero costumes indicate that the movie is going to be a superhero movie. But unlike superman and batman, the people inside have ordinary look. So viewers can assume that this movie will be ordinary people “kicking ass.” Also they are not looking at each other like the holiday poster. They are looking staring which seems like they are looking directly at the audience. It gives the poster very strong look with anticipation for the movie. The black background tells us that the movie will be dark, and violent. Also the font for kick ass is much contrasted with the back ground.

Artist Statement

What is the meaning of life? Who am I? Why this? Why that? We live with so many questions. Some answered, some not. We learn, we think, we seek religions to answer our questions. I think we do these so much because uncertainty scares us. We are somewhat desperate to find the answer. I thought this feeling or thought was interesting. So I wanted to explore this idea. My big idea is "Uncertainty." I got all my inspirations from different sources. My first one was Rodin's The Thinker. The motion and the face the sculpture makes is universal, and they can be related to everybody. Also my ideas also came from pictures of women in blind fold in flickr. If you were ever blind folded, you can sympathise with the pictures. The scared, confused look. They are also universal. Also I wanted to incorporate the screaming in my mind whenever we think. Screaming in desperation to know the answer. I thought this picture was well illustrated in Munch's The scream. In my diptych. I wanteI wanted to incorporate all these emotions into one single picture. I distorted many figures, used many filters, masks and colors manipulation.

Blog assignment 3 #2

My inspiration also came from Rodin's Aguste Rodin. He also has a same big idea that i can relate to. Uncertainty. His big ideas are clearly shown in his work, "The Thinker." I think it is intriguing that he captured an exact universal humans' contemplating expression. And many of his work have no clothes on. I think it indicates that he wants to portray humans origin and desire to go to the natural state. I want to incorporate his thoughts and ideas to my art. And I want the audience of my art work to think and make the face just like "The Thinker"

Blog assignment 3 #1

My first inspiration came from Edvard Munch's works. His big ideas and his ways to portray the idea was very intriguing. All his art has a very similar themes. His images are dark, and has somewhat lonely, serene feeling. I think it is because he has a big idea of uncertainty. I think it is interesting that no matter what instrument he uses on his art, he can make it a same theme. Like pictures next to me. One is a brush, and one's an oil paint and one is a pencil like tool. But it all has this dark, serene theme. And his uses of lines and color mixture in his works are interesting. instead of making it a picture like. He makes it a whole new background. I definitely want to incorporate those works in my art.

Big Idea discussion

Reading the article, "Big Ideas and Art making" answered so many question I had. Whenever I'm in an art museum, I was always bored by the weird paintings that could have been drawn by a three year old. And even when I found an interesting work, I never knew what to do after that. But after reading this, I realized, the works are more than just paints on a canvas. Through their pictures, artists express their "ideas" and show it to the audience.  After realizing that, I googled many images I saw when I was at the museum, and observed the arts in that sense. And by doing that, in my mind, I made smarter comments than, "hmmm, that's interesting..." Also after reading this, I got to realize why some artists are more famous than others. It is not "what" they paint that get them famous, it's "how" they portrait their ideas. This article made a huge impact on me, and I think I will enjoy being at the art museum more.

Big Idea warm up

Confusion
Humans think, therefore we are different from animals and other inanimate objects. However, during the thinking process, we face some questions that we can't answer. Then we are confused. We hate that feeling, we feel lost, left out, and dumb. At least for me, I try to educate myself to not feel confused. And I think, if I'm confused all the time, I am no different from animals or inanimate objects

After
I try to think what will happen after now. Will I graduate, will I be successful, will I die tomorrow? We seek for religion, higher eduction, or palm readers, or magic balls to be better at predicting future. Will we seek for those stuff when we know we are all gonna die tomorrow? How will I act different from any other days if we actually know what is planned out for tomorrow for me?

Life
Life is a very broad term. We can associate so many different words to "life." But we have to answer this essential question in our life time, "what is the meaning?" We will all have to answer that when we face the opposite of life, "death"

Hayao Miyazaki

Hayao Miyazaki is a famous animator who uses computer for his extraordinary art work. He not only uses a great story plot, but he uses very very detailed art work to convey his messages.

He started as a manga artist, but he became a renowned award winning (including academy) animator.

His first computer assisted work, "Princess Mononoke", is about
Ashitaka, the main character, who tires to bring a balance to the violent war between humans and the nature. The society in industrial time is fighting against the monsters from nature and on the other side, the nature is defending the tyranny of humans along with Princess Mononoke who is raised by the wolves.

The plot itself is clear that Miyazaki is warning us that the nature will fight back if we fail to love the nature. However, Miyazaki further explains his message by using vivid imagery in his work.

The wolf on the right is looking at us directly. Its face looks like it is growling. Its fur is white which is different from the real wolves' fur. On the left of the wolf, there is a fragile looking girl whose face is covered with red that looks like blood. She is holding a knife that makes her seem like she is ready to battle.

The movie poster conveys his hidden message really well. So well that you can get the message without watching the movie. The big scary wolf is clearly mad at us, human who is in contrast so weak just like depicted through a woman next to it. And the wolf is warning us about something by growling, like a dog growling at people. Unlike other posters this poster has so many reds that looks almost unapproachable. It represents how violet our way of our lives are. Holding knives to one another and constantly battling. The princess is looking at us but not angrily but there is sadness in her eyes which look like she pities us. Just like how Miyazaki feels about our life style. The prediction from just looking at the poster indeed comes true in the movie. Battles after battle, blood, guns, and explosion, this movie gets really violent. It gets so violent and gruesome that the animation seems more gory than most rated R movies. And at the end, the nature unleashes her one last attack that kills almost everyone in the movie. I saw many correlations of the movie, the monsters in this movie represents natural disasters that is caused by human that damage ourselves. Like global warming, wild fire, and hurricanes that become more destructive every year. The main character is a lot like environmentalists who tries to warn us to change our life style. Hayazaki is telling us that if we don't change our life style, the mother nature will destroy us all.

Two popular movies, Spirited away, which won an academy award, and Howl's moving castle also convey Hayazaki's messages clearly using vivid artwork as well. In these movies, he shifts his main point to human's "greed." In the picture above, he represents his greed by turning  the main character's parents into pigs. It shows human's gluttony and how messed up we can become. Even though we can only see her back, judging by her hair standing up and her hands in front like defending herself, we can see that the girl is scared. I think Hayazaki is telling us adults that our greed is scaring kids. Same message can be seen from the movie howl's moving castle. Even though the castle looks like a big metal monster, if we look at it carefully, we can see that it is just like the city we people live in. I see houses, pipes, chimneys, and drills, and machines from construction sites. All representing the human's city lives and how scary it can look. Later, Howl's castle destroyed by wars that break out between two cities over, again, greed. In the end, it gets remade to a better, not just moving but "flying" castle. I felt like the movie was saying that if we don't stop the greed in our lives, our lives will be ruined. And the movie is saying that we can rebuild the whole society to be a better place if we just try to do so.
